一般執業醫師與專科醫師
在美國醫生分為一般執業（家庭）醫師（general practitioner）與專科醫師（medical specialist）。一般執業醫師提供內科、外科等所有科的診療服務。民眾如果生病，首先會前往常去的一般執業醫師處接受診療。必要時，醫師會介紹合適的專科醫師。美國的醫業分工比我國進步，每每檢查必須各別請教相關的專科醫師，雖然煩瑣，卻容易接受精密的治療。不過，專科醫師一般可以收取高額的治療費用，據說這也是促使美國醫業分工發達的原因之一。
